What Is An Adhered Scar or Excess Scar Tissue Formation?

Scars that have healed improperly can form excess or abnormal tissue.  When healing occurs, there is a collection of cells and collagen that lie down to form a scar.  When these cells form in too random of a fashion, excess scar tissue is formed.  Remodeling is the realignment of collagen fibers over time.  If scar mobility does not improve on its own, physical therapy can help.

What Are Symptoms Of An Adhered Scar?

  • Decreased range of motion or mobility
  • Hypersensitivity or hardness of the skin
  • Inflammation
  • Dimpling
  • Stiffness
  • Pain
  • Itching

How Can Physical Therapy Help?

There are several techniques that a physical therapist can use to improve scar tissue mobility.  These include stretching, strengthening, trigger point dry needling, cross friction massage, myofascial release and IASTM. It is important to elongate the tissue and then strengthen it in the lengthened position to maintain the new mobility.  .If you have a scar that is causing you problems, call today to schedule an appointment or to discuss your scar with us to see if we can help you.
